Day to Night Smoky Eye Tutorial: Part II

Last week, I showed you how to achieve a basic daytime smoky eye. Now it's time to zhuzh it up for a night out! But don't worry, this look is still as simple to create. I opted for a standard black smoky eye (it translated as a blue-black on camera, which was a nice surprise), but you can use any color you want, really. Either way, just follow these steps to get the perfect nighttime smoky eye:

1. With a tapered blending brush, sweep a deeper transition shade into the crease of the eye, concentrating the product on the outer corner and dragging inward using windshield wiper motions. This will make blending the darker shade in the next step easier. You can stick with a more neutral brown, but I wanted to add warmth to the look, so I chose this cocoa shade.

2. Using a flat eyeshadow brush, apply your dark shade all over the lid in patting motions. You can do this a few times until you achieve the level of depth and pigmentation you desire. Be careful to stick to the lid and avoid the crease when packing on this color. (Tip: If you want to brighten the color of your eyeshadow, apply a white cream base underneath. If you want to deepen the color or bring out its dimension, use a black cream base, like a black gel eyeliner.)

3. Taking a small angled brush and the same dark eyeshadow, line your lower lash line, stopping halfway across the eye. Carry up at an angle to meet the shadow on your lid.

4. Blend! Take your time with this, and keep your movements controlled. This step is key to achieving that smokiness.

5. Apply black eyeliner (I recommend using a kohl pencil) into the upper and lower waterline to define and darken.

6. Bring some light back to the eye by applying a white eyeshadow to the inner corner and brow bone. Since I stuck with matte shadows everywhere else and wanted some sparkle, I chose an iridescent white.

7. Apply false lashes or a butt load of mascara to your top and bottom lashes. Dramatic lashes are necessary to the finished look, so the more voluminous, the better.

8. Work it, girl!
