Mission: Fit Monday | Top Three Protein Bars



Protein is an essential nutrient in any diet, whether or not you lead an active lifestyle. It's used by our bodies to build and repair tissue, meaning we need it to grow our hair, nails, bones, muscles, skin, and much more. Unlike fats and carbohydrates, however, the body doesn't store protein, so it's important we're getting enough from healthy food sources every day.

For those of you who do lead an active lifestyle, protein is that much more important as it aids in muscle development, fat loss, and workout recovery. Since I'm in the gym 4-5 days out of the week strength training and lifting weights, I shoot for one gram per pound of body weight to refuel my muscles and give me the energy to power through the next workout.

While I try to get the bulk of my protein from lean meats, nuts, and whole grains, sometimes I'm on the go or just don't feel like cooking a full meal. When I need something fast and easy, I reach for a protein bar. Protein bars are a quick, convenient snack that can help you efficiently hit your protein goals. With that said, here are my top three favorites:
  1. Pure Protein. Averaging 20 grams of protein and 200 calories per bar, this is a solid guilt-free source of protein. I like these also because they're relatively low in fat and carbs. These bars come in a variety of flavors with gluten-free options, including Chewy Chocolate Chip, S'mores, and Chocolate Peanut Butter (my favorite, obviously). I haven't come across a flavor that doesn't taste great. It's almost like eating a candy bar!
  2. Luna Protein. When I want a nutritious snack but don't necessarily need a whopping 20 grams of protein, I like Luna Protein bars. These bars are gluten free, have a low glycemic index, and pack 12g of protein. I've tried the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Chocolate Peanut Butter, and Mint Chocolate Chip, and all of them are yummy!
  3. QuestBar. High in protein (~20 g per bar) and an extensive flavor selection (over 18 flavors!). These are often praised as the "best tasting protein bar" and for good reason. I reach for these when I'm feeling indulgent though, because they're comparatively higher in carbs. My favorite flavors are Cookies & Cream and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. (Tasty Tip: Throw one of these babies in the microwave for 15 seconds for a gooey dessert-like treat!)
