Superfood Focus: Manuka Honey

All strains of honey are known to hold some level of antibacterial power, but imagine your average honey on steroids. Enter Manuka honey – a honey produced by bees that pollinate the manuka bush in New Zealand. Not only is it sold in raw form for consumption, but it's also become a highly coveted ingredient in beauty products. This so-called superfood comes with a hefty price tag (upwards of $40 per 500 grams), but for something that's proven to kill bacteria, reduce inflammation, and increase skin vitality, I would say it's worth every penny. Continue reading to find out the three main reasons you should be incorporating this miracle food into your diet and/or beauty routine.

1. Boosts immunity + promotes healing

Research has shown that Manuka honey can kill bacterial strains and superbugs, including MRSA, E.Coli, and Staph. Its antibacterial, anti-viral, and anti-microbial properties make Manuka honey a great natural remedy for bacterial diseases. While it can work internally to soothe and shorten symptoms of a common cold like sore throat, it can also be applied topically as an anti-septic to external cuts, scrapes, and abrasions.

2. Improves gut health + aids digestion

Because it's also an anti-inflammatory, Manuka honey can help treat intestinal inflammation and everyday digestive ailments such as nausea, upset stomach, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). For digestive problems, it is recommended to take up to 3 teaspoons (or one tablespoon) every day.

3. Improves skin texture + tone

Given the fact that it's nutrient-dense and rich in antioxidants, Manuka honey does wonders for the skin. It has the ability to treat various conditions such as acne, eczema, rosacea, and psoriasis, and because it's naturally moisturizing, it nourishes the skin and doesn't strip it of its essential oils, which is important especially during these winter months. Apply it as a moisturizing mask at night before bed, leaving on for about an hour or so before washing off.

The benefits sound pretty amazing, don't you think? I'm giving it a go!

P.S. When choosing a Manuka honey, choose one with at least a UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) of 10+ to really see the therapeutic benefits.
